Ubud is a great place from wich to peruse the villages that make up the 'craft' and 'cultural' center of Bali. Ubud's popularity as an art and craft destination may have begun in the 1930's when the local prince, Tjokorda Gede Agung Sukawati, started inviting foreigners to his palace. It was certainly acknowledged when Queen Elizabeth II requested to visit the artists' village of Pengosekan, and today the multitude of tours and trips one can take to various artist villages shows that ubud and its surrounding villages are most solidly on the map.
